These Japanese pre-Gibson lawsuit Tokai ES clones are sometimes described as the Holy Grail due to their sheer quality. This example from 1981, the first year of manufacture, is even more interesting coming with upgraded pickups, upgraded wiring and full Gibson livery (headstock logo, inner body sticker and hardcase). The pickups are the much sought after Bill Lawrence PAF humbuckers which have an exceptionally sweet tone – these example were previously installed in the Gibson Les Paul Custom belonging to Luke Morley of Thunder. On top of that this guitar has the Jimmy Page “42-tone” wiring fitted with push/pull pots on the two volume and two tone controls to provide a massive amount of tonal variety. Using the combinations of these controls puts the pickups into serial and parallel mode, in and out of phase in addition to being able to select individual pickups in humbucker or single coil mode. Wiring diagrams are included in the case! This special guitar is in great condition for almost 40 years old with only minor marks to the glossy trans cherry finish. The weight is comfortable for an ES-335 style instrument at 8lb 4oz (3.8kg).
